Mexico Sterling Silver Christmas Bells with Bow Brooch | Damasco Gallegos & Taxco Eagle Mark | Mid Century Vintage Holiday Three Bell Pin
I found this sterling silver work of art Christmas holiday bell pin at an antique store that was going out of business in the Antique Row area of Denver, Colorado. The brooch belonged to the elderly owner who said she purchased it in the l950s, she thought. The marks on the back confirm that mid century time period.
The mark in the back triangle includes “DS” in a circle for the silversmith, Damaso Gallegos who worked in Taxco beginning the in l940s. His work is featured on pages 183-4 of the book, “Silver Masters of Mexico. On page 184 are bell pins he designed similar to this one. Also on the back is a “conquistador eagle mark” with the number 3. That mark dates this piece from 1949-1952, with the “3” as well as “925” for sterling silver. The location, “Mexico” completes the markings.
From l947 to l979, the Mexican government required jewelry to have, what was called an “eagle mark” to identify the silversmith and location where it was made by using a number. The number location in this case is a 3, which is Taxco.
There are three bells dangling from decorative bow with center berries. The pin measures 3” in length and 1.75” in width. The brooch is beautifully crafted and has a warm, gentle patina which adds to its charm. Overall this holiday pin is in very good vintage condition for its 65+ years of existence, meaning it shows better than average wear for its age. Even so, it has been worn, loved, and cared for, bringing with it a sense of Christmas past. I have left it in the condition found, believing the future owner should decide whether to polish the silver or leave the patina.
The three bells have their clappers, and softly ring with movement; the pin and clasp are strong and secure. The pictures offer greater perspective on the vintage condition and holiday charm of this signed sterling three bell vintage brooch by the master silversmith, Damasco Gallegos.
