The first department store in Philadelphia and one of the first in the United States was originally known as John Wanamaker Department Store and founded in l861. Later The Wanamaker’s Grand Depot opened in l876, in time for the American Centennial Exposition. By l910, a new structure in Center City, Philadelphia, with twelve floors opened as Wanamaker’s. John Wanamaker & Company lasted over a century.
This antique cuff links set is from that 1910 decade. It’s a complete set of mother-of-pearl, cuff links and shirt studs in the original “John Wanamaker Philadelphia” box. A similar round Mother of Pearl cuff links and studs, without the box, is featured on page 78 of Howard L. Bell, Jr.’s book, Cuff Jewelry, which was published in l993.
These cuff links are double-sided, with an iridescent look, and measure .5” in diameter; the studs slightly over a .25”in diameter and are edged with a silver tone metal. The cuff links are marked “Barry” and “Plate” on the back.
Overall, they’re in very good vintage condition for their eleven decades of existence showing light wear for their age. The blue presentation box is in good to very good vintage condition showing better than average wear for its age. The “good” part is the bottom of the box (see pictures).
