Developed in the 17th century, the slide rule was the most common calculation tool for science and engineering. Slide rules hit their usage height during the l950s and l960s, and this working miniature is from that mid-century era. By l974 slide rules were mostly obsolete when scientific calculators took their place.

This slide rule tie bar is in its original Swank box, complete with instructions titled, “Essentials of the Slide Rule Simply Explained,” is a rare fine. In addition to the box marked “Swank” in block letters, the marker’s mark, an “S” inside a design block is on the black of the clip. In l936 what was the Attleboro Manufacturing Company became Swank Products, Inc. They continued to offer men’s jewelry under the “Swank” name which began as a men’s jewelry brand in the l920s.

This 20th-century slide rule tie bar clasp is perfect for any 21st-century engineer, software developer, tech enthusiast, or mid-century vintage lover. This miniature slide rule works and has a sliding middle bar which has two small rhinestones, one at each edge. It is quality crafted in gold tone metal with a well detailed plastic ruler that sits on top and is attached to the metal.
Measuring 1.75” in length and 3/8” wide, this tie bar clasp is in very good vintage to excellent condition for its 50 plus years of existence. It has been well cared for, showing better than average wear with only a few very gentle scratches. The bar is “tight” to move showing little use there as well. The box is also to very good vintage condition, with a slight edge mark (see pictures). The directions are in good to very vintage condition with some slight paper discoloration. The clasp apparatus works fine.

The pictures offer greater perspective on the styling and condition, including the slide rule working, box and directions. This is a wonderful mid-century vintage accessory with an exceptional flair for a different tech era.
